Historical Events
Did you know that the first airplane flight happened on December 17, 1903?
Orville and Wilbur Wright grew up in Dayton, OH. The brothers were very technical minded and great at solving mechanical problems. While they did not attend college, their hard work and natural abilities led them to open a bicycle sales and repair shop in 1892.
In 1900 the Wright brothers began the first of their experiments with flying in Kitty Hawk, NC. They began with flying glider planes to learn about the aeronautics and control of the different aircrafts. Between 1900 and their famous first flight in 1903 the brothers tested over 200 different wing designs and air frames, designed and built an engine to power the plane and the new plane to house it.
The first attempt in powered flight was on December 14, 1903. Unfortunately, this flight was unsuccessful and ended with damage to the plane. After three days of repairs the brothers were ready to try again. At 10:35 am on December 17th the brothers attempted their second flight. The flight lasted for 12 seconds and traveled a distance of 120 feet. Three more tests were completed that day. The longest of which being 852 feet and lasting 59 seconds.
While these times seem minuscule by today's standards, we would be nowhere near where we are today without the Wright Brother's work and discovery in the late 1890's and early 1900's.
