
March 2019 Happenings
Now is the perfect time to get those tomato and pepper seeds started indoors ready for an early spring planting! Also a great time to start planting those cool weather vegetables that can withstand those last frost days of March and April.
March is the third month of the year in our Gregorian Calendar. It was the first month in the early Roman calendar with March 1 designated as the start of the new year. It is named Martius after Mars, the Roman god of war. Great Britain and her Colonies continued to use March as their beginning month until 1752.
Girl Scout Day recognizes and celebrates the Girls Scouts of the USA. This day celebrates the creation of the first Girl Scout group on March 12, 1912.
Spring begins on Wednesday, March 20, marking the start of spring in the northern hemisphere and the start of fall in the southern hemisphere. March also is Women’s History Month which honors outstanding women in technology,medicine and engineering.
There are many holidays and special events around the world that are celebrated in the month of March. In the U.S., Daylight Saving Time begins on Sunday, March 10, so be sure to set your clocks forward one hour that day. St. Patrick’s Day is on March 17, and celebrates the saint’s religious feast day and the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for over a thousand years.
