Historical Events

The Golden Gate bridge is an icon in San Francisco and is known throughout the world as an engineering wonder. The city of San Francisco began looking for an engineer to build the bridge in 1919; however, the bridge did not open to the public until 1937. The bridge itself took just over 4 years and 4 1/2 months to build. The Golden Gate Bridge is 1.7 miles long, still holding the 15th spot for longest suspension bridge, and 90 feet wide.
On May 27, 1937 the bridge opened to pedestrian traffic, followed by motor traffic the next day. On opening day more that 200,000 crossed the Golden Gate Bridge paying $0.25 per person. While there are no longer pedestrian tolls, the current toll to cross the bridge for motorists sits at $8.70 a whole $8.20 more than the $0.50 it cost to cross when the bridge opened in 1937.
