Historical Events

"To boldly go where no man has gone before."

Star Trek was created by Gene Roddenberry and premiered on TV for the first time on September 8, 1966. This TV series was not only ground breaking for the time, but has continued to have a significant impact on science, technology, and pop culture to this day.

Star Trek stood out when it premiered in 1966 for it's diverse cast and diverse episode concepts. The original Star Trek cast included Lt. Nyota Uhura (played by the African-American actress Nichelle Nichols) and Lt. Hikaru Sulu (played by the Japanese-American actor George Takei). Star Trek tackled many issues faced during the 1960's including race, war, peace, and the generation gap; frequently touching on the Vietnam War.

Despite fan attempts, Star Trek was cancelled after only 3 seasons. Post cancellation, Star Trek really took off causing the network to play reruns and the development of a huge fan base. Trekkies (Star Trek fans) have been ever faithful allowing the show to develop 9 spin off TV shows, 13 films, and multiple books, comics, and video games.

Many of our scientific and technological advances have been influenced by Star Trek. Communicators on the show are essentially cell phones, the tricorder is a slightly different version of the MRI machine and in 1976 a prototype for the space shuttle program was named after the Star Trek ship Enterprise. Don't worry, we still have plenty to strive for!
